July 18th & 19th 2020
We love to rescue Hounds and share aviation with young people. We also like to go on a vacation each summer and this time of year that normally means flying to Oshkosh Wisconsin to EAA AirVenture then on to see family and see something new; last year was Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse along with family in WI and MN as well as a well known aviation store, Sporty’s, on the way home.
This year with EAA AirVenture Oshkosh cancelled along with most other events and gatherings and the travel restrictions in place we wanted to find a place closer to home in the northeastern US where we could do the outdoor activities we love so much: running, hiking, biking, swimming, water stuff, and sight seeing.
We researched the travel restrictions and got a lot of good advice from aviation groups on Facebook as well as friends then decided on Ithaca NY with a possible day trip to see the Canadian boarder and a day in Lake Placid before returning to Ithaca.
Day One we tidied up things at home and flew out of Westminster Md around 10 a.m. We had a good flight up to Ithaca over the plush woodlands and lakes. We got a good look at the finger lakes on our way in and arrived about 1 p.m. We had some issues getting the rental car in that they were closed so the airport operator took us to our hotel.
For dinner Laura found Ithaca Beer Company that had great outdoor seating, craft brews, and great food. We got our exercise in walking 2 miles there then 2 miles back. It was in the upper 90s so I’ll count that as exercise. We got settled in the hotel and enjoyed seeing the town on foot.
Day Two we started the day with a run in the state park next to the hotel and saw one of the 10 Must See Waterfalls; Buttermilk Falls. After that we were finally able to pick up the rental car and we were off to Taughannock Falls by hiking the North & South Gorge trails around the rim overlooking the falls. With the heat of summer the flow over the falls is low but still beautiful. After that we visited the swimming beach on Cayuga Lake to cool off followed by a drive to see several of the wineries along the west side of the lake. We ended up stopping at the Thirsty Owl Wine Company for a wine tasting and then an outdoor dinner overlooking Cayuga Lake. Tired from the days activities we stopped at Wegmans to stock up the hotel refrigerator and begin resting for tomorrow as Laura searches and plans the next day.
